Being a PCO driver is more than just carrying passengers from one point to another. It comes with a set of responsibilities, particularly if you hire a PCO car, and only those who fulfil those responsibilities enjoy a smooth and stress-free experience.

Experienced drivers usually know how to go about their business. However, new drivers using the PCO car hire service for the first time aren’t always aware of their responsibilities. As a result, they end up facing problems that can be easily avoided.

In this article, we will offer useful tips to PCO drivers using a hired car for the first time. Give it a thorough read to make informed decisions and avoid getting into trouble.

    Maintain Cleanliness

The first thing passengers notice in your vehicle is cleanliness. A vehicle with clutter, food leftovers, or a foul smell can negatively affect the passenger experience, possibly resulting in negative feedback.

    Interior cleaning tips

Coffee spills, fingerprints on windows, and the smell of sweat are common in cars. Check your car at the end of every ride to clean any mess that passengers leave behind. You should also keep microfibre cloths to wipe any stains off windows and dashboard, while keeping a mild air freshener in your car can help remove any foul smells.

    Exterior cleaning tips

Your car’s exterior is vulnerable to sun exposure, dirt, dust, and weather elements. Washing it regularly can help keep it clean and leave a positive first impression on passengers. Remember that while your car provider is responsible for major servicing and maintenance, keeping it clean from inside and out is almost always your responsibility.

Understand the Terms of Your Hire Agreement

Your hire agreement can mean the difference between high profits and high expenses. Make sure you understand it thoroughly before signing the contract.

Many drivers skim through the terms and conditions of their agreements instead of reading them thoroughly. This is a big mistake because some of the conditions in the contract may not align with your interests, and you may end up signing a contract that causes more stress than convenience.

Before signing the contract, make sure you understand:

    Mileage Limit

This is the limit you will be allowed to drive during the week. It can be anywhere between 700 and 1,500 miles. Driving beyond this limit means you will be paying extra costs per mile in addition to the weekly hire fee. So, choose a package that offers a generous mileage limit if you plan to drive full-time.

    Damage Policy

PCO car hire contracts usually have a fair wear and tear policy. This includes minor damage like scuffs and scratches that come with daily driving. However, every company has a different fair wear and tear policy. What one company considers negligible damage can be a significant issue for another. Ask your car provider what they consider negligible damage, and inspect the car thoroughly before driving off. Take pictures of any existing damage that may require a visit to an auto body shop to protect yourself if a dispute arises later.

Plan Your Routes and Work Areas

Driving aimlessly, hoping that you get a ride request, is a waste of time. Top earners don’t hope. They strategise. They operate during morning and evening peak hours and in areas where the ride demand is usually high. Railway stations, football stadiums, and concert halls are a few common examples of such areas.

You should also use the same approach. Know when the demand is high and operate in the right areas for a constant flow of rides.

Another great way to improve your earnings is to avoid empty miles. These are the miles that you drive after dropping off a passenger without picking up the next ride. The right thing to do is to stop your car in a safe spot and wait for the next ride. Not only will this reduce your fuel consumption, but also improve your daily income.

Handle Emergency Situations and Breakdowns Properly

No matter how well-kept your car is, it can break down anytime. Flat tyres, strange noises, and mechanical failures are some common issues that PCO drivers face with their vehicles during shifts.

When facing a breakdown, stay calm and inform your car provider. All the reliable PCO hire companies offer 24/7 breakdown assistance so you can keep earning without interruptions.

Next, have an emergency kit in your car with a first aid kit, flashlight, tyre pressure gauge, screwdriver, and basic tools for quick fixes.

Staying prepared for emergencies helps you tackle them properly.

    Check Your Vehicle Regularly

You can start with the fluids. Having a low level of engine oil, coolant, or brake fluid can damage the car’s components and affect its performance as well. So, check the fluids regularly and inform the car provider immediately if they are below the required level.

Next, keep an eye on your tyres. Worn-out or poorly inflated tyres are at a higher risk of blowouts. They can also lower your car’s fuel efficiency. So, make sure they are properly inflated and in good condition to stay safe on the road.

Lastly, all the lights of your car should be working fine. Driving with faulty headlights or indicators can get you fined.

    Final Thoughts

Knowing your responsibilities as a PCO driver can help create a pleasant experience for the car provider, passengers, and you as the driver. While it’s true that your car provider will deal with major challenges like car insurance, maintenance, and servicing, you should treat the car as your own and report any issues to the car provider in time. Being negligent can not only affect your ratings on the platform but also result in fines or even termination of the contract. Be responsible. Stay in control of your career.
